System board 5V PG Voltage Failure

Date: Oct. 06, 2021
Time: 1 hour
Problem:
My Dell Poweredge r510 abruptly shutdown, and would not power back on.
How the problem was resolved:
- Checked idrac and found there was voltage issue
- idrac reported bad voltage reading for “system board 5V PG”
- Googling the issue lead me to this page: https://support.oneidentity.com/tpam/kb/229674/drac-is-reporting-an-issue-with-voltage-system-board-5v-pg
- Resolution steps were followed
- Shut down server
- Unplug power supplies
- Remove, and re-seat power supplies
- Hold power button for 20ish seconds
- Plug power supplies back in
- Press the power button
Was the problem resolved?
No, the initial problem was fixed, the server booted and all checks were good, but it failed again after a month.
Update 2024:
The issue seems to persist, occasionally powering off abruptly. It happens about once every few months.
Attempted solutions since original post:
- Changed the RAM back from 8GB sticks to the 4GB sticks I had initially.
- Removed Power Supply 1
- Put Power Supply 1 back in and pulled Power Supply 2
- Checked the motherboard for failing capacitors
- Updated everything from BIOS to IDRAC including both power supply drivers.
Unfortunately nothing has fixed this issue and I have decided to just simply live with it until I can upgrade to better hardware.
