System board 5V PG Voltage Failure

Image of a server

Date: Oct. 06, 2021

Time: 1 hour

Problem:

My Dell Poweredge r510 abruptly shutdown, and would not power back on.

How the problem was resolved:

  1. Checked idrac and found there was voltage issue
  2. idrac reported bad voltage reading for “system board 5V PG”
  3. Googling the issue lead me to this page: https://support.oneidentity.com/tpam/kb/229674/drac-is-reporting-an-issue-with-voltage-system-board-5v-pg
  4. Resolution steps were followed
    1. Shut down server
    2. Unplug power supplies
    3. Remove, and re-seat power supplies
    4. Hold power button for 20ish seconds
    5. Plug power supplies back in
    6. Press the power button

Was the problem resolved?

No, the initial problem was fixed, the server booted and all checks were good, but it failed again after a month.

Update 2024:

The issue seems to persist, occasionally powering off abruptly. It happens about once every few months.

Attempted solutions since original post:

  • Changed the RAM back from 8GB sticks to the 4GB sticks I had initially.
  • Removed Power Supply 1
  • Put Power Supply 1 back in and pulled Power Supply 2
  • Checked the motherboard for failing capacitors
  • Updated everything from BIOS to IDRAC including both power supply drivers.

Unfortunately nothing has fixed this issue and I have decided to just simply live with it until I can upgrade to better hardware.

    1. I am getting the same error on both my R410 servers after I added new 10G PCI adapters. Were you able to resolve the issue or did it come back?

      1. Sorry for the very late reply, but the issue does seem to come back after a bit. I am still not sure of the permanent fix, but I believe that it is one of the redundant power supplies.

Edit: I just noticed that you said you added a 10gb port to the server. It might be that for some reason it requires too much power for the r410, or it could have stressed the power supplies a bit more exacerbating the issue. I had just upgraded from 32gb ram to 80gb and I wonder if that might have brought on the power failure.
